Edgewood State Hospital Videos

The following videos are all in WMV format, and will play in Windows Media Player. I recommend saving them to disk rather than trying to view them as streaming video. To do this,
right-click the pictures and choose SAVE TARGET AS... This will prevent the videos from "skipping" if the network connection is slow.

Here is another video of the demolition. This footage was taken from the top of a Deer Park firetruck! The cameraman keeps the film rolling long after the
building has collapsed, giving a very rare glimpse of what it looked like after the smoke had cleared. As someone on the video says,
"Look at that pile of rubble!" This video is 7 minutes long and is about 19 MB.
Thanks to Paul Obrien from the Deer Park Fire Department.
|
Clips from John Huston's classic "Let There Be Light". This is footage of the Edgewood/Pilgrim
grounds during World War 2 when the complex was know as Mason General Hospital. At the time, the builds were brand new
and in PERFECT condition. It is odd to see the buildings looking so perfect since we are all used to how
they looked when they were abandoned and mercilessly vandalized. This video is 6 minutes long and is about 15.5 MB.
For more information on this film, see this link.
|
These are the TV news clippings that aired on the day of the demolition, August 16, 1989.
It includes video from NEWS12 and NBC 4. This video is 2:30 and is about 4.3 MB. Thanks to Eric Aup
and Steve Arch for this contribution.
|
"THE ASYLUM" - This is a 7 minute video, filmed in black and white, in 1986. If offers a very rare look at the inside of the buildings, as well as an explosive ending. At the time this was filmed,
the vandalism and neglect were seemingly beyond repair (and these guys certainly weren't helping matters!) The accompanying audio is fittingly "Sanitarium", by
Metallica. It is approximately 12 MB in size.
Thanks to grimers.com for this contribution.
|
Here is a 1 minute video of the demolition of the main building. It was recorded with
a camcorder from the traffic circle of Commack Rd. Thanks to Rick,
Eric Aup and Steve Arch for contributing it to the site. It is approximately 1.75 MB in
size.

I myself really enjoyed the video, i used to goto Opacity.com but thissite is better.a so called adventure. I envy them as well as many of you do ( the people in the vid) yet i have a lot of respect to the person(s) who keep this site going on, It was in fact the greatest place to let your imagination run wild back then. There is a connection between us all that post here. Truth is born out of arguements, so i see on here. I have a film of the demolition of the edgwater building, Brentwood F.D was filming it there. On VHS of course, But it seems that this website has sufficient film, especially the talented one from the class of 85/86. Due to limitations of films that i have, they are decent quality if that's one of the values you sort for. I now live far away (63.5 )miles from the 89' ground zero. But choose to take Commack rd to go back to my parents house instead of the Sag P.W.. Some things i dared to do whislt there in 87. tried to walk across the exposed eye beams that once held floors in place there. tried to understand what many elders wrote on the walls there, mostly rock groups that we all know that brings back personal memories. Tried to climb the Tower (smoke stack)seem back in those days ,the person who wrote their name on the highest peak won a mental game of an ego trip. Well i did not do it for there was shit piled high in the entrance. however, bet one of ya did manage to prevail. Still have atleast 27 papers on personal records that were scattered on the second floor. No c rations though. Found some keys there, still have one. Also have a pair of reddish rusted window bars (from Pilgrim ) a building sign in Blue and yellow writing # 86. Had an uncle may seem crazy to many, Once told me if my grades improved in school, that next summer he would take me to pilgrim ( facinated about the 2 smoke stacks that stood like beacons of hope LOL ) from the street i grew up on. Well i finaly went there that next summer, Mental defectives and peanut butter sandwiches, fake fur coats in the summertime, the place,, the HIDAWAY!! that was the name of this cafeteria, sat down with 2 schizophrenics, bipolars and word salad conversations. Beautiful yet at the same time, concerned about my well being. Thank you uncle, for showing me what most would cast aside. Edgewater was vacant, pilgrim was not. Edgewater was like Oct 31st everyday. I still think of this place, I found a picture of it from a Research book on ECT and Thermal baths. Framed of course in my bedroom hanging over the closet. I dio in fact remember a voice saying Lucifer, though not from an elevator shaft, seem to come from the areas that me and my friends were furthest apart, perhaps we were trying to scare each other from a distance. Had no spray paint at some visits so used the ceiling to write my initails and of course Slayer on the catwalks leading to the upper portions. Windy up there at the power plant, there was 2 levels going outside.leaned over the edge and marked the bricks v

Wow, I'm amazed to find this site tonight (thanks dad!). I lived in Charter Court growing up and could see the building from my bedroom window as a kid. I was probably haning out there at least 1-2 times a week between the ages of 14-17. My memories are much like the home vid with the Metallica song! Amazing!

Great video from the Gimer's, and Let there by light. The Grimer's video makes me so envious. I used to get laughed at for listning metal, why couldn't I have been born 10 years early? I would have liked to give this place my own personal touch of evil. The army guy's seemed to come out ok even after all they had been through. I wonder why the civilians didn't experience the same results. It just seems funny that they go from one extream to another. First lock up every body who looks funny, or has a bad attitude. And when that dosn't work just let them become homeless and smash people with brick's. I just don't understand.

Well Joe I found out from somebody who's friends with the grimers on the lioddities boards what that "Flame Retardant Japanese Ceiling Fan" graffiti was supposed to mean. Being that Rotten13 brought up the asylum video again I figured I'd let everyone here know that it was just meant as something stupid and random that one of them wrote, if anyone cares to know (I know Joe was baffled just like I was).

The funniest thing is in that grimers video, someone spelling metal wrong. At the end of the video on the wall it says Death To False Meatle.

If you look carefully in the video shot from the fire truck crane you can see the smokestack of the powerhouse shortly after 102 crashes to the ground, it is a brief glance because after that it's obscured by smoke and dust.

I want to know if that guy in the Grimers video who owned the hearse at the time was named Mark? Or if he sold it to a guy named Mark. I used to be friends with a Mark from N Babylon that owned three hearses, one of which was a Caddy like that one.

CD - It sounds like Pilgrim to me. You are not the only one to confuse the two... Many people mistakenly called Edgewood, Pilgrim State.

Scud, You might be right. Maybe you can help me. The geriatrics ward & the surrounding buildings just to the north of the old railroad station, would that be deemed pilgrim state or edgewood? Thanks.

the buildings were closed up in 1971, and they were definitely closed in 1984...are you sure youre not confusing edgewood with pilgrim state? also, does anyone know who took the third video (the one minute long home camcorder demolition from the traffic circle)?

Joe, in order to accommodate other buildings that at the time were still operational, we ran cables from the geriatrics ward on the east side of the property out to these peticular buildings. The new telephone switch which my company installed was housed on the first floor of the geriatrics ward. The smell of urine&feces in this building was so bad , my coworkers & I would work for 15minutes then run out to catch our breath!

Good stuff, Cellar Dweller. Why was there a need to run cables through the tunnels of long abandoned buildings?

Many years back my friends & I used to climb in thru a broken door & climb to the rooftop. We would go there mainly on halloween night to freakout our girlfriends. After awhile it became a ritual at least one friday out of every month to go there! One time we went into the basement& found old civil defense food rations dated from Nov.61. I also ran 27 square miles of communications cable thru the steam tunnels back in 1984 for a company called UTC. I also witnessed an autopsy while installing a wallphone in the morgue. From my home in NorthBabylon I could see the tip of edgewood from my second story window.. |
